Living Big Living Small

Learning to Embrace the limitations instead of asking for more.

I didn’t set out to intentionally live small. In fact, I’ve always wanted a house I could create a home for my family in and entertain guests, but finances and lifestyle decisions have dictated otherwise. Over the years I have started to fall in love with the tiny home trend. It’s a way to live more intentionally and escape the hustle and bustle of our modern world demands. Really, I’ve never lived big, but moving to a 500sq foot one bedroom studio with a husband and newborn was definitely downsizing.

There are lots of adjustment that have to be made when you live in 500sq ft., but these are the reasons I am learning to love it.

  1. It gives us the financial freedom for my husband to work part time, for me to start my own business, and invest in projects that are helping us build the life we want instead of spending more time working to make money. We get to focus our time, energy, finances and efforts to what we value most, which is family time, outdoors, travel, quality sustainable products, experiences, education, and our restoration projects (more details on these in the future).

  2. Smaller environmental impact. Less space means less stuff and learning to value and appreciate what you do have and only hold on to your favorites. I’ve done a lot of decluttering and downsizing - getting rid of all the things that we don’t absolutely need and love. When we have more space we fill it and often times its with stuff we don’t need. I love having less. It feels so much lighter and I prefer buying better quality things.

  3. It forces us to be creative. Are walls are filled with guitars, surfboards, baskets, and hats. It brings decoration and function and teachings us to be creative in how we store things and what we choose to buy.

  4. We spend more time outside. Don’t get me wrong - we love our tiny space, but we love the outdoors even more. It becomes our create escape and extended living space. We love to spend time outdoors during the day and treat it as part of our house.
