My Miracle Morning
There is more to a morning routine than just waking up early.
I’ve always been an early riser, but didn’t make the most of my mornings until recently I decide to experiment with my morning routine. I’ve had certain healthy elements in place, but nothing consistent until I decided to read the book “Miracle Morning”. The past couple months have been hectic with launching a new coaching program, working for clients, and staying on top of every day life. I noticed things were getting out of wack and some old habits were sneaking back in (like checking my phone first thing in the morning). I was getting tired of hitting the ground running and feeling like every morning I was scrambling and reacting to the world around me. I was starting my day exhausted, grumpy, aimless, and chaotic.
It’s been about a month now of implementing a routine and I’ve noticed a difference on the days I start with my morning routine. Now, I’m going to be honest here, not every morning has been a consistent “Miracle Morning”. Having a one year old who isn’t a great sleeper, living in a one bedroom tiny house, and being self-employees doesn’t make it easy. The great thing is your morning routine doesn’t have to take hours - it can literally be 10 minutes. Is simply adding in a few elements that help you stay grounded and connected to the things that matter most in life.
Why I believe everyone should invest their time and energy in establishing their own morning routine:
Your day starts with intention and calm. You get to ground yourself and connect to the things that matters most to you. It’s the whole idea of putting your oxygen mask on before helping others.
It gives you more energy and motivation for what lies ahead, especially if you follow the S.A.V.E.R.S. outlined in The Morning Miracle.
It helps you stay focused on your goals and lets you feel more accomplished in the day.
I followed the routine listed in the book that goes off the acronym S.A.V.E.R.S
S ilence - I use the Insight Timer app and choose a guided meditation or follow a scripted prayer.
A ffirmations - I was pretty resistant at first, but still committed. I created ones that were personal and seemed more like positive reinforcement and reminders than saying something like “I am great”.
V isualization - Helps me stay positive and connected to my big dreams and goals as well as the day to day.
E xercise - My biggest struggle due to circumstances, but notice when I exercise in the mornings I have way more energy and motivation for the rest of the day. Sometimes this is a walk in the park with my son, 5 minute workout, or morning yoga stretches. Really all you need is anything that helps wake you up and get your body moving.
R ead - I’ve actually gotten through a few books and thats with only reading about a chapter a day - granted several were ones I had started and couldn’t find time to finish. (For those of you curious - I read “Make Your Bed”, “I Am Hutterite”, “Essentialsim”, and “Sleep Smarter”.
S cribe (also know as journaling for the modern day reader) - I’ve finally kept a consistent journal, which with my record I will write in it once and then skip a few years and then write a few days and skip another year. I don’t write a lot. Typically a page or less and its just whats on my mind or things happening, but its kinda cool being able to look back and see where I was and where I’ve come.
What I did to get started
Read “The Morning Miracle”
Created a cozy space just for my morning routine (chase couch with blankets and pillow)
Collected everything I need for my morning activities and have them ready in my little corner (diffuser, candle + lighter, journal, salt lamp, meditation app, book, affirmations, lemon water, workout clothes, daily task list)
Woke up 30 minutes earlier
Talked with my husband about helping with our son for the morning
Go to bed early to give myself the extra time without skimping on sleep
If you’re not a morning person, start small. Simple wake up 5 minutes early and spend 1 minute on each of the SAVERS. As you get more use to waking up earlier and getting in the routine you can add a little more time. Be gracious with yourself. Not everyone’s morning will look the same and we all have to make adjustments for our life circumstances. Your routine won’t always look the same and you will go through seasons, but it’s possible to have one even if you have kids at home or not.
