Unpause: Jumping back into business after taking time to reflect on motherhood
“Mothers and children are a forgotten species in today’s society”.
Pregnancy brings a lot of attention. But, after childbirth, women often get isolated into mom groups. They must navigate the shift from womanhood to motherhood alone. This significant transformation in body, mind, and spirit is what shapes future generations, so, it can’t be ignored. Being a mother was never meant to be a one-person job. You used to have a village, but today's Western culture offers little to no resources. Many mothers I know are not getting the nourishment, help, and resources they need—myself included.
Mothers wear many hats, are pulled in many directions, and are given so little recognition and respect for all we do and for the significant role we play in the shaping of society.
I was starting to feel invisible in the world at the beginning of my motherhood journey and held onto my business to help financially, but also to give me an outlet for personal expression and purpose. I’m thankful for my business, but it got to the point where I couldn’t do both motherhood and business well. I felt like I was failing at both. I was triggered all the time by my children, exhausted, and impatient. I wanted to be present and enjoy my life, but ended up resenting both my business and family.
This past September, I made the decision to take a step back from my business to intentionally focus on my own healing and motherhood.
I have been on this rollercoaster of motherhood for almost six years now. With Harley transitioning to school age, we decided to try homeschooling. I no longer wanted to feel so divided with my time and attention. I needed better balance in my life and had a lot of wounds coming up around motherhood. I did a deep dive into homeschooling and motherhood, as well as my own ancestral trauma.
My 10-month journey started with a nervous system reset with @the_reconnected. I went through the free 5-day nervous system reset (which I would highly recommend to everyone), the 21-day reset, and followed up with the Reconnected Parenting course, which I am still slowly working through. Working with intentions, breathwork, and normalizing trauma and triggers in parenting has been life-changing. Having a more regulated nervous system has helped me show up better for my family and bring more clarity around what I want for my future and my family.
Along with the Reconnected work, I added in some inner child work focused on unblocking, healing, and reconnecting with my authenticity. Dreams started to become a reality for us as we were able to take a three week trip to Costa Rica with the kids to explore the possibility of living abroad.
We loved the trip. It was an incredible experience for us and the kids. It helped grow my own capacity in seeing I am capable of traveling with kids and that travel is possible with young kids. Along with that, we made the decision that living abroad is not right for us at this time in our lives, but we want to continue to travel with the kids and have a vision of living abroad for the future. This trip did make it clear that we are ready for the next adventure with our family of four and we are on the move.
My time away brought about many revelations. I am so thankful for the time to heal and reflect on my own life, motherhood, travel, business and the education system. I will be sharing my reflections and revelations on each topic over the next couple of months so stay tuned and let me know what subjects you are most interested in hearing about.
